Weight & lifestyle
Almost nobody comes to this appointment needing to be told that vegetables are good and exercise helps. What is usually missing is a plan that fits an actual life — shift work, a bad knee, small children, a budget, or twenty years of trying things that did not stick.
So the useful version of this appointment is specific. What does a normal week look like, what has been tried, what got in the way, and what is one thing that could realistically change.
What it covers
Tap a card for the detail.
Blood pressure, waist, relevant blood tests, and a look at anything medical that could be contributing — including medicines and thyroid.
An accredited practising dietitian is worth far more than general advice. Where you have a chronic condition, a care plan can make several visits Medicare-subsidised.
Particularly useful if pain, an old injury or a heart or lung condition is what has stopped previous attempts. A care plan can subsidise visits where you are eligible.
Poor sleep makes weight harder to shift, and weight makes sleep apnoea more likely. Worth untangling rather than working on one and not the other.
The Australian guideline for healthy adults is no more than ten standard drinks a week and no more than four on any one day. Worth counting, because it quietly affects weight, sleep, blood pressure and mood.
Nothing about this works as a single appointment. Booking the next one is the most predictive thing you can do.
How it works here
Only if you agree to it. Weight is useful information but it is not compulsory, and being weighed against your wishes is not care. We will ask first, every time.
Most people who book this have. That is useful information rather than a failure — knowing what has been tried and what specifically got in the way is where a different plan comes from.
Where it is clinically appropriate it can be part of the conversation, alongside everything else. We are not able to advertise particular medicines, and it is not the starting point.
Where you have a chronic condition and a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, you can access up to five individual Medicare-subsidised allied health services each calendar year. Many providers charge a gap on top, so ask them.
Questions
Yes. A GP appointment covers the medical side — blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, liver, thyroid, sleep and any medicines that may be contributing — and can refer you to a dietitian or exercise physiologist.
Only with your agreement. We will always ask first.

The current Australian guideline for healthy adults is no more than ten standard drinks in a week and no more than four on any one day. A standard drink is smaller than most people pour.
It can. Sleep apnoea and weight influence each other in both directions, so if you snore heavily or wake unrefreshed it is worth raising in the same appointment.
This page is general information for people in the Gosford and Central Coast area. It is not advice about your situation and it does not replace a consultation. If you are worried about a symptom, book an appointment or call us on (02) 4311 3800. In an emergency, call 000.
Say it is about weight or lifestyle and reception will set aside enough time to do it properly. All Medicare-eligible consultations are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card.
