Health assessments
A standard consultation is built around the reason you came in. A health assessment is built around everything else — the things that are not causing symptoms yet, the checks that have drifted, the medicines nobody has reviewed, and the risks that only show up when you add them together.
Medicare funds these deliberately, because they find things. They need a longer appointment, so tell reception what you are booking when you make it.
What it covers
Which ones apply depends on your age and circumstances. Ask us and we will check.
A Medicare-funded assessment for people aged 45 to 49 who have at least one risk factor for chronic disease — family history, weight, smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar.
It is available once, and it is the appointment designed to catch things at the point they are still easy to change.
An annual assessment covering medicines, memory, mobility and falls risk, hearing, vision, continence, mood, nutrition and how you are managing at home.

A dedicated appointment that produces your estimated risk of a heart attack or stroke over the next five years, using the Australian risk calculator. Available from 45, and from 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
An annual health check is available at any age for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and it opens the door to follow-up services. Tell reception when you book.
If you already have a chronic condition management plan, the review is the assessment that matters most — it asks whether the plan is working rather than repeating it.
Employment and insurance medicals are not Medicare-funded and attract a private fee, quoted before you book. Mention what the form requires so enough time is allowed.
How it works here
Considerably longer than a standard consult. Tell reception which assessment you are booking so the right amount of time is set aside — it is the main reason these appointments go well or badly.
It varies by assessment, but generally: blood pressure, weight and waist, a review of your medicines, your family and personal history, relevant blood tests, immunisation status, and a conversation about smoking, alcohol, activity and mood. For the 75-plus assessment, also memory, mobility, falls, hearing, vision and how home is going.

It requires at least one risk factor for chronic disease, which most people in that age group have without realising — family history counts, as does weight, smoking, blood pressure or cholesterol. Ask us and we will check.
