Home Services ECG

A heart tracing, done here.

An ECG records your heart's electrical activity. There are no needles, it takes a few minutes, and it can be done in the same visit rather than sending you elsewhere.

Open Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm. No referral needed to see a GP.

Rhythm and pattern

What it shows

What it shows

The electrical activity of your heart at rest — rate, rhythm, and patterns that can point to strain or previous damage. It is a snapshot, not a full assessment of your heart.

Worth understanding

What it does not show

What it does not show

A normal ECG at rest does not rule out heart disease, particularly if symptoms only come on with exertion. Sometimes further tests are the right next step.

Stickers and wires

What it involves

What it involves

Small stickers on your chest, arms and legs, lying still for a minute. You may need to expose your chest, and you can ask for our practice nurse to be present.

Questions

ECG questions.

What is an ECG?

A recording of your heart's electrical activity at rest. It shows rate, rhythm and patterns that can point to strain or previous damage. It takes a few minutes and involves no needles.

Can I get an ECG at the clinic?

Yes, an ECG can be done on site where your GP considers it useful.

Does an ECG rule out heart problems?

No. A normal resting ECG does not exclude heart disease, particularly where symptoms only occur with exertion. Further tests are sometimes the right next step.

Does it hurt?

No. Small stickers are placed on your chest, arms and legs and you lie still for about a minute.

I have chest pain right now. What should I do?
