Children's health
That is the whole reason paediatric general practice works differently to adult general practice. A child who was fine at breakfast can look unwell by lunch, and the question is rarely “is this serious?” so much as “is this the kind of thing that gets worse?”
Our GPs see children of every age, from the first weeks of life through to the teenage years. Because we are a family practice, the same doctor who looks after you can look after your kids — which means the family history is already in the room.

Weight, length, head circumference, feeding, hips, eyes, hearing and heart — plotted on a chart so we are looking at the trend rather than a single day.
These visits are also for you. Feeding, sleep, reflux, and how you are actually coping all belong in the appointment.
The childhood schedule is free on the National Immunisation Program, and every dose is recorded to the Australian Immunisation Register so your records stay current for childcare and school.
If your child has fallen behind, catch-up is straightforward. Bring whatever record you have.
The bread and butter: ear infections, tonsillitis, croup, chest infections, gastro, hand-foot-and-mouth, and the rashes that all look alike at 9pm.
Most of it is viral and needs nothing but time and fluids — and knowing that from a doctor is worth the visit.
Speech, movement, social play, feeding and toileting. If something feels behind, or childcare has raised it, bring it in early rather than waiting to see.

Two of the most common long-term conditions in Australian children, and both benefit enormously from a written plan the school or childcare can follow.
We review what is working, what has been triggering it, and whether the plan still fits the child.
From around fourteen, young people can be seen on their own if they prefer. Mood, acne, periods, sport injuries, contraception, vaping and sleep all come up.
Confidentiality is explained to them properly at the start, including the limits of it.
How it works here
A few practical things that make it easier — most of them learned from parents telling us what did not work.
The blue book if you have it, or your child's immunisation history statement. Any medicines they are on, including puffers and creams. And your own list of questions — it is very easy to walk out having forgotten the one you came for.
Please book one appointment per child. It sounds like a technicality, but two sick children in a fifteen-minute slot means neither gets looked at properly. Tell reception you need two and they will put them together.
Yes — all Medicare-eligible consultations are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card, and children need to be on a card of their own or listed on yours. Vaccines on the National Immunisation Program are free.
Tell us at the start. Most examinations can be done on your lap, in whatever order suits, and we do not need to do everything in one visit. Nothing about a routine appointment has to happen against a child's will.
Bring the form to the appointment rather than dropping it at reception. Most of them need an examination or a look at the record to complete honestly.
Questions
There is no fixed age. From around fourteen, many young people prefer to be seen on their own, and we can see them alone where they are able to understand the discussion and make decisions. Confidentiality and its limits are explained to them at the start.

Any fever in a baby under three months should be assessed the same day — ring us rather than booking online. For older babies and children, ring and describe what is happening and reception will work out how urgently you need to be seen.
Yes, and it usually helps. Book with whoever you saw last where you can — the family history is already in the notes.
Yes. The six to eight week check covers growth, feeding, hips, eyes, heart and the first round of immunisations, and it is also a check on how you are going. Book a longer appointment for it.
