Antenatal & postnatal

Most of pregnancy is routine appointments.

Blood pressure, urine, growth, and a conversation about how you are actually going. Those visits do not need to be at a hospital, and doing them here means less travel and a doctor who already knows you.

Shared care works alongside your hospital rather than instead of it. The hospital manages labour, birth and anything that needs their team; we handle the regular checks in between and keep everyone in the loop.

Worth sorting early

  • Whether your GP is registered for shared care with the hospital you plan to birth at — ask us.
  • Your first antenatal visit bloods, which cover a standard set of tests.
  • Vaccinations — whooping cough, influenza and RSV are free during pregnancy.
  • Any medicines you take, which sometimes need reviewing.
  • Who you want in the room, and how you would like results given to you.

Routine visits

Routine visits

Blood pressure, growth, urine, and how you are feeling. These are the appointments shared care is built around.

Free on the NIP

Pregnancy vaccinations

Pregnancy vaccinations

Whooping cough, influenza and RSV are all free during pregnancy and are given at particular points along the way. Your GP will tell you which apply and when.

You and the baby

Six-week check

Six-week check

The baby's growth, feeding, hips, eyes, heart and first immunisations — and a genuine check on how you are going, which is the half people skip.

Asked properly

Postnatal mood

Postnatal mood

Perinatal anxiety and depression are common and treatable, and they are asked about routinely rather than left for you to raise. A Mental Health Treatment Plan can be part of the answer.

Practical help

Feeding and sleep

Feeding and sleep

Feeding difficulties, reflux, weight gain and sleep. Where a lactation consultant or child and family health nurse would help more than we can, we will say so.

How it works here

How shared care works.

Can I do shared care here?

Ask us whether your GP is registered for shared care with the hospital you plan to birth at. Arrangements differ between hospitals and it is worth checking early rather than assuming.

How many visits are here and how many at the hospital?

It depends on the hospital's schedule and your pregnancy. Broadly, the routine checks happen here and the key milestone visits happen there. Your hospital will give you the schedule.

Is it bulk billed?

Medicare-eligible antenatal consultations are bulk billed here with a valid Medicare card. Hospital costs are a separate matter, and NSW Health can tell you about those.

What if something is not right?

Ring us, or if it is urgent, contact your hospital's maternity assessment unit directly — reduced movements, bleeding, or severe pain should not wait for a routine appointment. In an emergency, call 000.
