Sexual health

It is a routine appointment.

Sexual health testing is one of the most ordinary things general practice does, and one of the most put off. Nobody at reception needs to know why you are booking — “a general appointment” is enough.

Most testing does not involve an examination. A urine sample, a self-collected swab and a blood test cover the majority of it. Results come back in a few days and get their own appointment if there is anything to discuss.

Worth testing if

  • You have a new partner, or more than one.
  • A partner has told you they have tested positive for something.
  • You have symptoms — discharge, pain, sores, burning, unusual bleeding.
  • You are starting a new relationship and would rather both know.
  • You are planning a pregnancy.
  • It has simply been a while and you would like a baseline.

Urine, swab, blood

STI testing

STI testing

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea on a urine sample or a self-collected swab; syphilis and HIV on a blood test. Australian guidance is that any sexual health check should include HIV and syphilis.

4Cyte collects on site, so it can be done straight after the appointment.

Usually simple

Treatment

Treatment

Most bacterial infections are treated straightforwardly. We will also talk through telling partners, which is part of stopping it coming back, and there are anonymous ways to do it.

All options

Contraception

Contraception

The pill, the ring, the injection, implants and IUDs. We can prescribe here and talk through which suits you; some procedures require specific training, so ask what we do here.

Time matters

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception

Available from a pharmacy without a prescription, and the sooner the better. Guidelines describe a copper IUD as the most effective option when fitted within five days.

Free to 25

HPV vaccination

HPV vaccination

Free on the National Immunisation Program up to and including age 25, as a single dose for most people. Catch-up here is straightforward if it was missed at school.

Self-collection

Cervical screening

Cervical screening

A five-yearly HPV test from age 25, and you can collect the sample yourself. See our women's health page for how that works.

How it works here

Confidentiality and cost.

Will anyone find out?

Your medical record is confidential and is not shared with your employer, your partner or your family. Some infections are notifiable to NSW Health by law — that is a public health requirement rather than a disclosure to people you know, and if a test is positive your GP will explain exactly what it means.

Do I need an examination?

Usually not. Most testing is a urine sample, a self-collected swab and a blood test. Where an examination would help, it is discussed first and you can ask for our practice nurse to be present.

What do I say to reception?

“A general appointment” is entirely sufficient. You do not need to give a reason.

How long do results take?

Usually a few days. If there is something to discuss you will be asked to come in rather than told over the phone.

Is it bulk billed?

The consultation is bulk billed with a valid Medicare card. Pathology is billed by the laboratory, usually directly to Medicare. If you do not have a Medicare card, ask reception about the options before you book.

Questions

Sexual health questions.

Is STI testing confidential at a GP?

Your medical record is confidential and is not shared with your employer, partner or family. Some infections are notifiable to NSW Health by law as a public health requirement, and your GP will explain what that involves if a test is positive.

What does STI testing involve?

For most people a urine sample or a self-collected swab, plus a blood test. Australian guidance is that a sexual health check should include HIV and syphilis testing. An examination is often not needed.

Is sexual health testing bulk billed?

The consultation is bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card. Pathology is billed separately by the laboratory, usually directly to Medicare.

How often should I be tested?

It depends on your circumstances. A new or additional partner, any symptoms, or a partner testing positive are all reasons to test. Your GP can suggest an interval that fits your situation.

Do I need to tell reception why I am booking?

No. "A general appointment" is enough.

This page is general information for people in the Gosford and Central Coast area. It is not advice about your situation and it does not replace a consultation. If you are worried about a symptom, book an appointment or call us on (02) 4311 3800. In an emergency, call 000.

Book a confidential appointment.

You do not need to explain it to reception, and most testing takes one standard consult. All Medicare-eligible consultations are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card.
