Home Services Referrals to specialists

Referrals, and what happens next.

A referral is more than a piece of paper. It is a letter that tells the specialist what has happened so far, and it is the point at which someone should explain the plan to you.

Open Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm. No referral needed to see a GP.

Not a formality

The letter itself

The letter itself

It carries your history, your medicines, what has been tried and what the question is. A good letter saves you repeating yourself and saves the specialist repeating tests.

It is a conversation

Choosing who

Choosing who

Public or private, waiting time, location, and who is good with the particular thing you have. You can ask, and you can say no to a suggestion.

Ask before you go

What it may cost

What it may cost

Specialist fees are set by the specialist, not by us. We will tell you what we know, and it is always worth ringing their rooms to ask about out-of-pocket cost before your appointment.

Coming back

Coming back

After a specialist visit, book back in. The ongoing management usually returns to general practice, and the letter needs to be gone through with you.

Questions

Referrals to specialists questions.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist?

For a Medicare rebate on a specialist consultation, yes. Your GP writes it as part of the appointment.

How long does a referral last?

It depends on the type of referral and the specialty. Your GP will tell you, and it can be renewed.

Can I choose which specialist I see?

Yes. Waiting time, location, public or private and who suits your particular problem are all part of the conversation.

Will the specialist appointment cost me anything?

Specialists set their own fees. We will tell you what we know, but ring their rooms to confirm any out-of-pocket cost before you go.

Should I come back after seeing the specialist?

Yes. The ongoing management usually returns to general practice, and their letter should be gone through with you.
