What this is
Most of what a GP does is care you asked for. This is different. An employer, an insurer or a training provider wants a medical opinion about you, on their form, to their requirements.
That changes the appointment. The form sets the agenda, the report goes to whoever asked for it, and because it is not about diagnosing or treating your own condition, it sits outside Medicare and is booked as a private appointment.
Tell reception which assessment you need when you book. The most common reason one has to be repeated is that it was booked as a standard consultation.
What we assess

Fitness for duty against the inherent requirements of the role. Depending on the form: history, examination, blood pressure, vision screening, hearing screen, spirometry and urinalysis, completed at the one visit.
The SIRA NSW workers compensation certificate, first and subsequent, and the reviews that go with a return-to-work plan — where we are your nominated treating doctor.
Certificates and reports for a NSW compulsory third party claim under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, covering capacity for work and for daily activities.
Pre-placement and fitness-for-duty assessments for construction, warehousing, transport and industrial roles, including working at heights and confined-space forms supplied by your employer.
Life, income protection, trauma, superannuation TPD and salary continuance examinations, completed on the insurer’s own form with the report returned to them.
Pre-placement health checks for childcare, education, aged care and university nursing or medical placements, including hepatitis B serology and catch-up vaccination where required.
On the day
Wherever every part can be done at the visit, your GP signs the form during the consultation rather than leaving it to be finished later.
Your GP works out what is being asked and in what detail, so nothing is missed and nothing unnecessary is done.
Past and current health, medicines, injuries, and whatever is relevant to the requirements of the role or the claim.
What the form requires. Commonly blood pressure, height and weight, vision screening, urinalysis, and examination of the systems relevant to the request.
Where they can be done here, they are done at the same visit. Pathology is collected on site by 4Cyte, so bloods are taken before you leave.
Completed and signed during the consultation where possible. If a result is outstanding the report is finalised once it arrives, and reception will let you know.
To the organisation named on the form and nobody else. Your GP will tell you what it says before it is sent.

Better to know before you take an appointment than after.
Audiometry and spirometry are done here, so a form asking for a hearing screen or a lung function test can usually be completed in the one visit. If your form calls for something that needs equipment we do not hold, reception will tell you before you book and point you to where it can be done.
The report
You will be told what is going in the report, and you are entitled to ask questions about it.
What is found, and an answer to what is asked — accurately, whether or not it is the answer you or the requesting organisation were hoping for.
A finding cannot be left out, a conclusion cannot be altered to suit, and a document cannot be backdated.
If the assessment picks up something about your own health, your GP will tell you. That part can be dealt with as an ordinary consultation.

Questions
No. The assessment is requested by an employer, insurer or other organisation rather than for the diagnosis or treatment of your own condition, so it falls outside Medicare and is booked as a private appointment. In many cases the organisation that asked for it makes the arrangements with us directly.
Most take 30 to 45 minutes. A short certificate may be quicker; a detailed insurance examination running to several pages takes longer. Tell reception which assessment you need so the right amount of time is set aside.
No. Australian visa medicals can only be completed by a clinic on the Bupa Medical Visa Services panel, and we are not a panel clinic. Bupa Medical Visa Services can direct you to your nearest panel site.
Yes, where we are your nominated treating doctor. The SIRA certificate of capacity is the NSW workers compensation certificate, covering the injury, your capacity for work and the treatment planned. Bring your claim number and the insurer’s details.
No. The Order 43 assessment must be completed by a doctor registered with Coal Services, and we are not an approved provider. Coal Services publishes a list of approved doctors.

Ring reception before you come. Missing pages are the most common reason an assessment cannot be finished on the day, and it is usually fixable with a phone call to the employer or insurer.
Ring reception if there are no slots showing — they can often find one. All Medicare-eligible consultations are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card.
