What it treats

What it treats

Commonly used for sun spots and some superficial lesions. Not everything should be frozen — some things need a biopsy for a definite answer instead, and freezing them first would remove the evidence.

Brief sting

What it feels like

What it feels like

A sharp cold sting for a few seconds per spot, then an ache for a while afterwards. No anaesthetic needed for most treatments.

Blister, then heal

Afterwards

Afterwards

The area usually reddens, sometimes blisters, then scabs and heals over a couple of weeks. We will tell you how to look after it.

Repeat treatments

Some lesions need more than one treatment. That is expected rather than a sign it did not work.

Questions

Cryotherapy questions.

What does cryotherapy treat?

It is commonly used for sun spots and some superficial skin lesions, where that is the appropriate treatment. Your GP will assess the spot first, because some lesions need a biopsy for a definite answer instead.

Does cryotherapy hurt?

There is a sharp cold sting for a few seconds per spot, then an ache for a while afterwards. Most treatments need no anaesthetic.

What happens to the skin afterwards?

The area usually reddens, sometimes blisters, then scabs and heals over a couple of weeks. You will be told how to care for it.

Will it leave a mark?

Sometimes a pale mark remains, particularly on darker skin. Your GP will tell you what to expect before treating.

Is it bulk billed?

Medicare-eligible consultations and procedures are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card.
